About Schenectady:
The City of Schenectady is located in Schenectady County and is the county seat. The name is derived from skahnéhtati, a Mohawk word, meaning “beyond the pines” and was founded by Dutch colonists in the 17th century, many of whom came from Albany. The settlers were prohibited from the fur trade due to the power of Albany and it’s monopoly on the trade. Due to this Schenectady residents developed strip farm plots along the Mohawk River.
Thanks to being connected to the Mohawk River and the Erie Canal development of Schenectady was rapid in the 19th century. This changed the area from prominently farms to more people working in manufacturing, including a cotton mill, than agriculture or trade. Early on Schenectady became a hub for national companies including General Electric and American Locomotive Company, and since then has been involved in emerging technologies including nuclear powered submarines and other renewable energy forms.
The city became known as the “City that Lights and Hauls the World” thanks to Thomas Edison founding what would become GE there as well as where George Westinghouse invented the rotary engine and air brakes.
