About Saugerties, NY:

Saugerties is one of the few places in the Northeast that is amazingly dynamic, with breathtaking views, yet a quaint atmosphere around the town. Located between the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains Saugerties is a great place to find rest and relaxation while enjoying the views and small town shops and dinners.

Saugerties is located in Ulster County, New York, with a portion of the town located inside of Catskill Park.

During the American Revolution in 1777, the British lay anchor at Saugerties from October 18–22, and raiding parties burned Clermont and Belvedere, across the Hudson River, sloops near the Esopus Creek, and several homes and barns. During these few days, British General Vaughan learned of Burgoyne's surrender at Saratoga on October 17 and the British fleet left from the Mid-Hudson Valley, never to return again.

The Town of Saugerties was organized from the town of Kingston on April 5, 1811 and at that time the hamlet of Saugerties contained only twenty-one houses. The village was incorporated in 1831 as "Ulster," and changed its name to "Saugerties" in 1855.

Henry Barclay, from Manhattan, with his wife Catherine moved to Saugerties around 1825. Barclay had a dam constructed on the Esopus Creek and then in about 1828 he established the Ulster Iron Works to produce hoop and bar iron. His facility had a capacity to manufacture around 6,000 tons annually. and employed about 300 people with round the clock shifts. Then in 1830 Henry Barclay constructed a paper mill powered by the Esopus Creek.

In the early 1800’s, blue stone was quarried in nearby Toodlum (Veteran). At the height of blue stone quarrying, 2,000 men were employed, shipping about a million and a halfs dollars’ worth of blue stone annually from Glasco, Malden, and Saugerties. During this time blue stone was used for door sills, paving, curbing, and window sills:, much of which was used in New York CIiy.

In 1889 the "Saugerties and New York Steamboat Company" was started. 3 short years later, the steamboats “Tremper” and “M. Martin” collided with each other while both trying to dock first when arriving in Saugerties. At very low tides sometimes you can see the remains of the steamboat Saugerties north of the lighthouse which burned in the water in 1903.
