Keys to the Piano - Hilton Piano Center Blog

Digital pianos will NEVER replace the real thing! “ - Yeah? Not so fast!!! You hear these comments all the time. “They don’t have the same touch as an acoustic!”.   “It’s too complicated to learn with all those buttons”.  How do you fix them if something goes wrong?

And our quick answer is that there are pros and cons to both, because at Hilton Piano Center, we have an amazing array of both kinds, and even some that incorporate digital AND acoustic!

But in defense of the digital technology, we can honestly say that being a 3rd generation piano company, we probably would have totally agreed with you years and years ago when it was in it’s infancy, but things have DEFINITELY changed in leaps and bounds  as is the case with all technology, so let’s show you just one small example of where we are today.

For one thing, digital keyboards NEVER EVER need tuning.  That’s huge.  If you consider that acoustics should definitely be tuned twice a year, you are paying $250 and up each year… That adds up!

Second point in DEFENSE OF DIGITAL- the actual quality of the tones has chanced dramatically.  What started out as simple sampling- simplistic audio recording of each note at several different touch and volume levels and converting to digital-has morphed into a technology called MODELING which creates a piano tone via computer from scratch.  It captures every single nuance of your playing - including reproducing over 100 different levels of touch.

EXHIBIT C -IN IT’S DEFENSE — Built in sound systems that are internal to these keyboards and digital pianos have also transformed.  In some cases they use the same spruce pulp used in the piano sound boards for the speaker cones to perfectly replicate the sound that you would normally hear!  And what you hear in your headphones is vastly improved as well by capturing a sound that envelopes you in an amazing stereo experience..  You feel like you are in a concert hall with all of the reverb and other effects that are built in.

Plus, think of it as Apple and Digital pianos having a baby.   With the integration of AMAZING apps that connect via bluetooth, you can access many of these keyboards’ features right on your tablet.  You can download digital sheet music!  There are incredible lesson programs that in many cases work with the instrument where lights illuminate next to the correct note.  It’s revolutionary.

So in summary, PLEASE don’t discount discount digital.  It’s here to stay should you choose that route.  But again, if you are a real traditionalist and looking not only for a classic piano but also interested from a “furniture “ perspective, we don’t want to deter you by any means.

We have an incredible selection of BOTH that you can sit down and test for yourselves at Hilton Piano Center. ….. www.hiltonpianocenter.com
